Last August I started school at Biola University. The first class that I took was the Survey of the Old Testament. One of our requirements was to choose a verse and meditate and pray about it for three weeks. Then we were supposed to write a short paper telling what God had shown or taught us through that verse. Well, I chose Genesis 12:1:
“Now the Lord said to Abram, Go forth from your country, and from your relatives, and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you;”
I chose this verse because I was in a current dilemma; my fiancé and I were trying to make a decision regarding who was going to change jobs and move before we married, since we were commuting back and forth from OC to LA to see each other. I thought this verse might give me some clarity. After I started meditating on this verse, things at work continued to get worse, and I came to the decision that I had to start looking for another job. This verse gave me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and trust God with my job. God didn’t even tell Abram where he was to go, but he asked him to step out in faith. Verse 2 says that he will be blessed.
Thus, my job hunt started. What is amazing is that I felt just like Abram. God asked me to leave the comfort of Irvine, move far away from my close friends, and had no idea where I was going! I just knew I was moving closer to my fiancé. I also knew that moving back to LA/Ventura would put me further from school, and I had no idea how that was going to work out starting a new job and asking for time off once a week. It was the last thing I could worry about. During this time I was pulling my hair out! I was a worry wart and my current job was sucking the life out of me.
I then went on two job interviews that did not work out. The first I sought through a friend and the second through a headhunter. The same day I went for the second interview, I had lunch with some very close friends of mine. During lunch I was telling them how I was going to interview that evening for a firm that does custom homes and light commercial. While I was at that interview, a friend that I currently work with now was driving down to San Diego for a site visit. On his way back north he got in a car accident in Irvine and called the friends I had lunch with to help him. It just so happened that in their conversation he told my friends that his company in north LA was looking to hire one person, and they did custom residential and light commercial! Not only that, its location was near my fiancé!!!
So, I went on the interview. Guess what? What was the one thing I trusted God for? It was to figure out a way for me to continue going to school. No kidding, in my interview the boss said to me, “You can have a flexible schedule. Work whatever hours you want.” !!!! Are you kidding me? I didn’t even ask for it yet! Another thing…How did I know this was God? I once heard someone say that God makes things happen in a way so that he can be glorified and we cannot take credit for it. The fact is that I didn’t seek this job! It just fell into my lap! That’s how I knew.
