This was given to me in class by my Theology 4 professor, Dr. Hollomon. He is a walking Bible! Hopefully it can help those of us who have such a hard time memorizing bible verses. -Gina
1. Select key verses to memorize.
a. You might start with John 3:16 which most Christians have already memorized, and therefore you are already having a measure of success.
b. Instead of trying to memorize a number of verses on sin at the start of your program, pick out one key verse such as Romans 3:23. It is simple, short, and rather comprehensive. Also these with which it can be memorized will encourage you in further memory work.
c. Mark key verses as you have devotional reading in both the Old Testament and New Testament. Remember verses which summarize primary truths of Scripture and are most meaningful to you can be most readily memorized.
d. In your Bible used for verse memorization, circle the numbered reference of the verse you plan to memorize.
2. Review verses by starting from the beginning of your Bible and picking up all of the circled verses. Work on review verses each day until you have covered all of the verses in the Bible that you have memorized. Then go through the cycle again, picking up new verses that you have circled in the meantime.
3. Say verses before and after quoting the verse so that you can remember its location.
4. Meditate on the verses that you have memorized so that they become especially impacting in your personal Christian life.
5. Pray that God will give you facility in your verse memorization. HE DESIRES THAT YOU MEMORIZE HIS WORD.
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. ” – Joshua 1:8
